M is for Mungguy or Melaluca, commonly known as Paperbark. Mungguy are highly significant in Aboriginal cultures, providing materials for making shelters, canoes, coolamons (food containers, cribs) bandages, food wrappers and bedding. If that wasn’t enough, the bark and leaves of this magnificent tree have medicinal properties.
This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. The artist grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal language and plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species.
