N is for Nauclear orientalis, a magnificent tree endemic to the northern coast of the Northern Territory and Queensland. It is also found across Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, the Phillipines and Malaysia. While the flowers might look a little like a coronavirus, this tree is cyclone resistant, with edible fruits, soft wood for carving, bark with medicinal qualities, and supports bird and butterfly populations. It’s so significant it has many, many Aboriginal names across Queensland and the NT, and more across Southeast Asia.
This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. The artist grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal language and plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species.
