S is for Sterculia quadrifida

$200.00

S is for Sterculia quadrifida, known as Dundil in the Larrakia language of the saltwater people of the Darwin region, Malikini in the Tiwi islands, and Balkpalk in Yolŋgu Matha, in Northeast Arnhem Land. It’s known as a Peanut tree in English. This bush food is so significant it has many names across the northern parts of the continent. It’s beautiful, bright, hardy and a little bit Judy Chicago Dinner Party, I think it might be the favourite plant I’ve learned about in this series.

This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. I grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species in my adopted home.

Signed on the reverse by the artist.
