X is for Xanthostemon verticilliatus, endemic to northeast Queensland. They are known as Junjum in the Ngadjon languages of the far north, and as Bloomfield’s Penda in English. They attract pollinators - birds and bees - with their fluffy, star shaped flowers.
This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. I grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species in my adopted home.
