Z is for the ethereal Zebra Orchid (Caladenia cairnsiana) is known as Djubak in Noongar language. The tubers are a food source, and can be eaten raw or roasted. In addition to being a traditional food source, Djubak are delicate and have a special role in ecosystems - the presence of these beautiful flowers can indicate if an area of native vegetation is healthy.
This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. I grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species in my adopted home.
