H is for Hakea

$200.00

H is for Hakea laurina, known as Koordjit in Noongar and Wudjari languages and also as a Pincushion Hakea because of its spikes. These spiky plants were an important source of sugars and protein. The flowers contain nectar, while seeds were roasted and eaten too. They’re also important to local environments as they attract bees and honeyeaters.

This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. The artist grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal languages and plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species.

Signed on the reverse by the artist.
