L is for Lomamdra Longifolia, known as Woy-yin to the Yirrganydji and Djabugay Peoples of Northern Queensland.
It’s also known as spiny-headed rush mat and this spiky beauty is amazingly useful, the tough leaves were used for weaving baskets, dilly bags and fish/animal traps, the more tender leaf bases are a food source, and the seeds can be ground into flour. The beautiful tiny flowers are an amazing combination of burgundy and lemon yellow.
This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. The artist grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal language and plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species.
