P is for Pig Face, or Karkalla in the Biripi/Gathang languages along the NSW coast. I first became aware of these amazing plants when I went on a leadership retreat (in my previous career) to the Murrook Culture Centre. We did a bush and dune tour, learned about Karlalla (Pig Face) as a source of fruit and medicine, and learned how to find fresh water in the harsh dune environment. As an immigrant to Australia, that trip opened my eyes and mind to the truth of Australia’s history and also to Aboriginal culture and plant lore. I’ll never forget it.
This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. I grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species in my adopted home.
