W is for Warada, the Dharug or Sydney Language word meaning “beautiful” or “seen from afar”. The common term Waratah is closely derived, and the scientific name Telopea speciosissima is derived from the Greek word telopos (τῆλοπος), which also translates to "seen from afar".
This 20 x 20 mini acrylic painting is part of an A-Z series showing the diversity and beauty of Australian flora. I grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the project was an exercise in learning and appreciating Aboriginal plant lore, and learning more about Australian plant species in my adopted home.
Signed on the reverse by the artist.
