Bright Paradise
Inspired by a recent move to Gayamaygal country (NSW), the Bright Paradise series documents the native and introduced flora in the artist’s local, coastal region.
Valentine reimagines these lush environments in intricate drawings, flattening pictorial space and bringing botanical detail forward to the plane of the viewer, reminiscent of Japanese woodcuts.
The works draw inspiration from flora found in local gardens and national park areas, and reference iconic botanical works by Japanese and American pop artists including Hokusai, Hiroshige (Edo-era Japan), Murakami (Japan, 90s Neopop) and Andy Warhol’s iconic Flowers series. Described by the artist as “inside out paintings” the Bright Paradise series can be considered as a drawn meditation on the fleeting nature of growth, life and happiness.
